Its just allergies....right?

So the bad thing about global epidemics for people like me (hypocondriacs) is that we tend to think that we all the sudden have whatever the disease is, even if its something crazy. Well, its not this time, its just the flu, and I have a few of such symptoms, although they are the same symptoms as allergies, so I am going to go with that! :) I am working on my hypocondriacness (not a word). Honestly, if you would like my opinion on the subject (which I would assume you dont, but you are foolishly reading this so you will get it wont you! yes, indeed you will. My family--which by the way are probably the only ppl reading this thing--are probably rolling their eyes because they can never get too far AWAY from my opinions...hahahahah).....Anyway, my opinion is that media hype over such global epidemics (is that even the right word? pandemic? hmmm) is both good and bad. It serves a good purpose, alerting people of what is going on, but it just freaks everyone out at the same time. Then, people like me, hypocondriacs if you will, flood the ER's and probably annoy the doctors, who probably then dont treat them as well and then the whole thing just continues. And, these paranoid patients are probably pissing off a lot of ER admitting staff. (If any of my admitting staff friends are reading this, please let me know if you are being inundated with paranoid patients!) I know its bad, but yes the people who admit you into your local hospital do get very very annoyed of you! :)

OK enough ranting about the Swine Flu, I am going to just call it "Swine" I think its catchier....HAHAHAHAHA no pun intended. I am one of those people who laughs really hard at their own jokes! Onto more serious news, I saw Hannah Montana again today! It was great!! Even for the second time!! I know I know, that is not more serious than the Swine but.....It is more entertaining!

I am still having trouble uploading photos to my picasa album, I am sorry, I'll keep working on that! I dont really  have much Lebanon cultural experience to report. My Arabic class is going well...no class tomorrow...Labor day here! YAY already get a day off! ;) We kill for those back home! They have SOOO many here! Other than that there isnt really too much going on. I sleep a lot. I have these allergies/potential Swine. And I am actually pretty far along in the book Dreams and Shadows by Robin Wright, fascinating book about the Middle East. I am really enjoying it.

Well, I will get off now. I have been distracted so many times by phone calls and Facebook and Gmail chats that this probably no longer makes sense!! Stay tuned, hopefully my life will get more exciting in the days ahead. we are crossing our fingers for nice weather tomorrow to go to the beach!! :) Inshallah! (God Willing)

Much love,

Sasha

All Quiet on the Western Front

Hello all!

Not much to report today..its been a pretty mellow weekend. I have great new pictures to put up from when the cousins and I went to this cliff the other day....BUT the uploader thing was too slow when I first tried so I will try again tonight if I have more time. For those of you who are friends of mine on facebook, the pictures are there. So, Mom, Grandma...you can have Sonia log onto Facebook and show you if she hasn't already! :)

I have school tomorrow, I did a little studying today. So far what they are working on is still review for me, so thats nice...it is not too often I am at the top of the class!! :) Speaking of class, my dad just emailed me a scanned version of my BA! Guess we got it in the mail! Hopefully it looks good in the cheap frame I bought for it before I left. It was nice to see though, thanks Dad!

Now, if only I can get another one of those that says "Masters of Arts"....hmmmmm one of these days maybe!!

Anyway, won't bore you...just thought I'd check in to say I am alive and well and having a great time here. It is definitely more relaxing than running from class to class to work to Model UN to homework/study sessions that is for sure! :) Most of my dear friends back home only have to do that for a few more weeks too! Hang in there! :)

Much love,

Sasha

Back to School

For a multitude of reasons, my tutor did not work out...sooo I am going to the University my cousins go to for an intensive arabic course. I started it today and it is a muuuccchhhhh better idea than the tutor! So I am pleased.  It is a 2 day a wk/2 hrs a day session and it is a 24 credit hour class. I started two weeks late which turned out to be fine because it is still a bit of review. But what is nice, is she teaches us in formal arabic then tells us what the lebanese say. So that has been really helpful! Actually today I learned what a few words mean that I hear a lot...now I know what they've been saying! :)  I think the class will go until the beginning of June, just in time for my parents....and best friend Mara to get here! Yes, recent development, Mara will be joining me in Lebanon for a week!! She will be in Europe visiting her family and will hopefully be able to drop by! Shes still working on the details but it will be exciting if it works out!

Tonight my cousin Nancy (my only girl cousin my age) and I are going out to do some kareokey, so that should be fun! Hopefully they have some Britney Spears or High School Musical songs!! :)

Well....I am going to go now...dinner is ready!

Much love,

Sasha

Let the Routine Begin

My arabic lessons begin tomorrow.....it is going to be interesting. M-F for 1 hour with an instructor who doesn't speak any English...guess I'll have to learn!

Some things never change...

Today I went with my cousin Hani to our Grandpa's paint store in Tripoli. Some things never change. Tripoli is a strikingly different place than Beirut, and one should experience both to ensure a true Lebanese experience. While Beirut looks like a run down, short (height wise) New York City, Tripoli looks like.....well Tripoli. Sometimes in Beirut you get confused wether you are in Lebanon or the US because there are so many US advertisements, McDonalds, Burger King, Applebees, TGIFridays, malls, interstate, and nice buildings....but in Tripoli all the buildings look the way they have for years and years and years. There is something about it though that is really comforting, if you drown out the sounds of gunshots and dismiss the dirty streets anway. My Grandpa's store is the same. It looks the same every time I go, and smells the same too (of paint and gasoline fumes mixed together....no ventilation...yea...). Its comforting in a way because you know when you go there you wont be surprised, everything is in its place. However, two major changes have occured, 1. there is a computer on the desk, which dad must have brought last time he was here and 2. instead of Gido sitting where he usually does (at the desk which is now occupied by a computer) is his picture on the wall, a sad reminder of what things DO change.

After work, Hani and I went to visit my Grandpa's brother and sister. It was the usual visit of extended family. Chit chat and chocolates and not understanding the majority of the conversation. ALTHOUGH speaking of things that change, instead of hearing, what I like to call white noise, I am actually actively listening to conversations and picking up a few words here and there. Enough so that I know when the conversation shifts topics and when someone decides to ask me something out of the blue. Whether or not I can answer it is a different story! I try though....like how I can tell people I studied Political Science in university....guess that 1 year of Arabic paid off. ;)

Hmmmm what else. Not much. Hani, Zouzou, Tony, Nancy and I went to Beirut last night to go shopping and have dinner. Nancy needed to buy a friend a DVD I was supposed to bring from the US but she forgot to ask me. We were going to ride the gondola which they call "telefriik" that takes you up the hillside looking over the water and Beirut and its subburbus, but it was closed, maybe we'll try again soon. We went to the biggest mall in Beirut, it was nice. It was about the size of a big mall in the US...no Mall of America but bigger than Bellis Fair or Wenatchee for sure! :) They have a lot of US stores, but a lot of really cute Lebanese stores too. I was disappointed though that the store (like a Macy's I guess) that sold nice make up was just as expensive here as in the US. I was hoping to buy some good lipgloss or make up or something from there but I didnt bother!

Well....I am going to go eat lunch now. Although, I have been eating sweets already all morning (visiting people=gaining weight) That is something that is already changing, that I wish would fall under the category of "some things never change" and that is my weight! haha I knew it was a bad sign when the first thing each one of my aunts (seperately) said was that I was skinnier than last time......they're feeding me extra I think!!! hahaha Gotta get to the beach and tread water I guess! haha (not that you all really care...just thought I'd tell you anyway).

Hope all is well Stateside.....Miss you all

Much Love,

Sasha

Life's What you Make It-so lets make it Rock!

Well, I am back in Chekka now, after spending Easter weekend in Kfarhata, where my Aunt Samira lives. I spent the weekend with my aunt and uncle and two oldest cousins Samer and Sami and Samer's wife Lisa, who is 7 months pregnant! YAY! It was a nice relaxing weekend without internet or too many people.  My cousin Sami and I went to their house in Jouneih for one night because we got bored, figures, and while I was chatting all night with friends on facebook and Gmail, I looked down and saw the biggest spider you have ever seen in your life. It was HUGE!!!! I will put a picture of the monster so you can see. But I scared him and he hid so when I screamed everyone thought I was making it up. It took me like an hour to find him again, he was between the screen and regular door to the patio...needless to say it took like 5 grown men to kill the thing...yuck!!!

The rest of the weekend was spent at the house, watching tv, visiting friends in the village and going to church. I have never gone to church so much in one weekend...it was difficult for me.  Not only did I not understand a word that was said, but I didnt know/understand certain "rules" including why you can't cross your legs in church.  Needless to say, I appreciate being Protestant now more than ever (my family is Greek Orthodox).  Politically though, it was beautiful to see so many Christians together worshiping, Lebanon is unique in the Middle East because of this. Lebanon has a large Christian population but it is decreasing...

Lets see....what else! I will try to upload some pictures now (sometimes it doesn't like to work) I took a couple pictures of the family I was with so you can put names to faces! Sunday the rest of the family joined us in the village for a visit and I came home with my cousins from there.  Us kids went to the movie the Fast and the Furious...next week Hannah Montana :)  then we went out to one of their favorite clubs, it was the clubs 9th birthday so it was a big night! Many Lebanese celebrities were there, including a woman named Roula. I have been to her house, but never met her until last night. My uncle was the engineer who built her house so she is a family friend of his family. When she arrived in the club she kissed my cousin Nancy and we took pictures with her after she sang. Its nice to have connections!

Overall, it was a good weekend! I need a routine though I have decided! I sleep until like 12-1pm everyday...although last night it was warrented since Nancy and I came home at like 3am.  I am going to start my Arabic lessons soon....thus far we have done informal learning of words like what they say at Easter to eachother and the word for sunglasses....little things. So that should help. I am also going to start going to work with my cousin at my Grandpa's store.  And Inshallah (God willing) I will start going to the beach soon!! :) My favorite part!!!

Ok, well I started uploading pictures....it takes forever, I will try to get some up though!

Much Love,

Sasha

I cannot think of a good song for this title...

Hello all!

I am rushing to go with my cousin to his village in the mountains now, my aunt bought me some time by feeding him coffee! :) Sorry I did not write yesterday, I was online, but forgot! :)

Stories:

There was a huge thunderstorm yesterday, loud thunder bright lighting, you know the drill. Anyway, what is funny about this is this wkend is the Greek Orthodox Easter, last weekend was Catholics....And they say that it always rains on the Orthodox Thursday not Catholic because Orthodox is the "chosen" one. It was really creepy, it rained all day. And then they said, wait it will be sunny on Friday because he already died, (or something, my cousin is telling me the story now and he tells it 3 different ways) guess what, its sunny today! On a realist level, this really creeps me out. On a faith based level I find this very very cool. The very very UNcool part of this Holy thunderstorm is that it woke me up yesterday morning scared out of my mind....because in a country that is prone to war, the last thing I want to wake up to is thunder that sounds like someone is bombing the city next door! I sat straight up and almost woke my cousin, only to then hear the rain and see lightning...no big deal! haha I guess I watch too much CNN ;) (never)

Ok, that is all the time I have for stories....I have to go my cousin is ready to leave. My cousins and I went to see my aunt Sonia yesterday also and then to dinner with my cousin Sami (the one who came to the US last year).

I will have take photos of them and label them so you know who I am talking about I suppose!

OK!

Much Love,

Sasha

OHHH PS: (only Carly and Twin will really care...maybe Sonia...)
My aunt Sonia also LOVES Hannah Montana! She says she watches it every day!!! I LOVE DISNEY!
